Take a journey that leads you from slavery to freedom; from segregation to equality and from hardship to triumph on this exclusive private tour.

The saga of African-Americans from an enslaved people to leadership positions in business, government and the arts is among the greatest of American stories.

Alexandria, Virginia, is uniquely qualified to tell that story.

On this walking tour you’ll see:

Market Square, where human beings of dark coloration were bought and sold along with tobacco, chickens and tomatoes.

The mansion of a prosperous and powerful merchant who relied on 30 slaves to maintain his life style.

The business of an abolitionist Quaker, who said of slavery; “… it sickens my heart to reflect upon it.”

Join us for a guided tour of Old Town sites that provides a look into our country’s past and its struggle to live up to the words “liberty and justice for all.”

The tour begins at the Alexandria Black History Resource Center and includes stops at:
Alexandria Black History Resource Center
 (10 minute video & introduction to African-American Alexandria)
• Market Square
• Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop
• Carlyle House
• Dominick Barecroft Public House
• Gadsby’s Tavern.
• Franklin and Armfield Slave Pen
• L’Ouverture Hospital and the Freedman’s Bureau.

African-American Heritage Park: (Dedicated to the heritage and culture of Alexandria’s African-Americans)

This walking tour also can be done as a “walking and bus” tour.

Alexandria African-American Bus Tour (3.5 -hour tour)
This tour also departs the Alexandria Black History Resource Center and visits the sites listed above. The bus will drop the group off for brief walks to various sites.
Cost for Private Tour: $35 per person, $20 per person if transportation is provided.

Alexandria African-American 3.5-Hour Walking Tour
This tour is an in-depth walking tour (36 city blocks) of sites important in Alexandria’s journey from a slave-dependent economy to a thriving city honoring diversity.

The tour departs from the Alexandria Black History Resource Center. It is recommended that participants visit the Resource Center prior to the walk to view an 10-minute video of America’s first “sit-in.”
Cost: $35 per person.
Groups of 20 people or more.
