From Plant to Pipe:
How the Tobacco Trade Influenced Colonial Life

Travel back to the 18th Century, where your students will experience Colonial trade and learn economics along the way. Join Alexandria Colonial Tours for the tobacco supply chain game “From Plant to Pipe: How the Tobacco Trade Influenced Colonial Life.”

Your students will role play each stage of the 18th-Century supply chain – and learn the journey of 18th Century America’s cash crop tobacco – from the Colonial family farm to across the Atlantic Ocean and into the customer’s pipe in Great Britain.

Students will portray Colonial farmers, merchants, sea captains, and tax collectors as they buy and sell tobacco in an imaginary 18th Century market.

A Colonial costumed guide will lead your students as they learn 18th-Century mercantile economics, supply chain management, supply and demand, taxation, and balancing income and expenses. This activity is for elementary school age children.

Ages: Appropriate for children ages 9 to 12.
Time: Approximately 45 minutes.
